Ed was born in a log cabin near Sandwith, SK on March 10, 1934. In the 1940’s his family relocated to the Guelph area. Ed’s love of music began at an early age when he took over the music lessons his older brother Berkley was clearly not interested in! His talent for playing the clarinet, flute and saxophone blossomed under the tutelage of Ted Denver and the Guelph Police Boys Band. In 1953, at the age of 19, Ed enlisted in the Royal Canadian Infantry Corps and served with the United Nations Force in Korea. In 1956 he left the army and enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force Band as a Sgt. His many, many military postings included RCAF Central Band (Ottawa), North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) Band in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the Canadian Forces School of Music (Director of. Music Course) in Victoria BC. After touring the world, Ed’s final posting was to the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry Band in Calgary, AB where he retired in 1989 as a Master Warrant Officer.
All along his many postings Ed moonlighted with bands, gigging in night clubs with many talented musicians. He was a lifelong member and volunteer of the Royal Canadian Legion serving in many positions. He was a man with a quick wit, a big smile and a friend to everyone he met. Wherever he traveled around the world, he would open his big dog-eared address book that he always carried with him, and call people to get together for a « cold one ». We will all miss his corny jokes, his pocket full of photocopied cartoons, and his huge repertoire of stories of beer can collecting, hijinks with bandmates on tour, and silly escapades with friends and family. He truly was one of a kind. Rest peacefully Ed.
Special thank you to Ed’s devoted wife Marva for tirelessly and lovingly caring for Ed through his journey with Alzheimer’s. Thank you to Kara for her expertise and special caregiving way of helping with Ed’s care. Thank you to Dr. Sarah Tuck, Palliative care physician with such a sensitive heart, never too busy to take or make a phone call. Finally, thank you to all the compassionate nurses who eased the burden in the last few days. Words are not enough.
