In Loving Memory Of
Gloria Gertrude Dolhan
Gloria Dolhan, resident of Spirit River, AB, passed away peacefully at the Central Peace Health Complex Long Term Care in Spirit River, on Tuesday, December 22, 2020, at the age of 78 years.
She was born on October 13, 1942, the sixth child to Adolf and Mary Peddy and was delivered by a midwife at home on their farm south of Wanham, AB. In 1950, the family moved to Woking, AB, where she went to school for the first 10 years. In 1960, the family moved back to their farm south of Wanham, and she went to Wanham school to complete her education.
After her schooling, Gloria went to Edmonton, AB, for a year to take nursing, but returned home as she got homesick. She then went to work at the Holy Cross Hospital in Spirit River, where she met her husband Edward Dolhan. They were married on July 8, 1964. They moved south of Wanham to a quarter section of land Gloria had.
Their first daughter Kimberly was born in 1971, in Spirit River. Two years later in 1973, they had their son Trevor. The family moved north in 1976, to an outfitting business in Northern BC, where Ed was the outfitter. While wintering in Prince George in 1978, their third child, Melinda was born. Gloria did all the cooking, baking, paperwork and running base camp while Ed was guiding in the bush. She was raising her family in the wilderness and homeschooled her children.
In 1991, Gloria returned to the Peace Country and stayed with her sister Ruth and her family for a year. She then moved to Spirit River where she got a job working at Ternaway’s store, cleaning the dental office and Listhaeghe’s building. She worked at Ternaway’s store until 2004, once her health started deteriorating. She developed spinal stenosis and moved into Pleasant View Lodge. She enjoyed her stay at the lodge, but unfortunately, her health got worse and she needed more care. So she moved to the Long Term Care facility at the Central Peace Health Complex in Spirit River on March 17, 2011. There she remained until her passing.
Gloria had a strong Christian faith and had an amazing church family. She was a camp counsellor at David Thomson Bible Camp. She taught bible school and was a big part of Mothers That Care, and Awana: the children’s after school program.
Her children, grandchildren, and family were her life. She loved them and was proud of them and their accomplishments.
Left to mourn her loss are her children: Kim Dolhan, Trevor (Laurie) Dolhan and Melinda Dolhan; grandchildren Soledad Escober Dolhan and James Dolhan; sisters: Rita Yuros, Dorothy Maciak, Joan (Art) Krefting, and Hilda (Reg) Woitas; brothers Harold (Ella) Peddy and Wilfred (Donna) Peddy; sisters in-law Rose Peddy and Alice Dobish; brother in-law Glenn Olsen; ex-husband Edward Dolhan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Gloria was predeceased by her mother Mary and father Adolf Peddy; sister Ruth Olsen; brother Lawrence; Harold’s twin brother August; brothers in-law: Harry Yuros, Nick Maciak, and John Dobish; nephews Clinton Dobish and Clinton Peddy; and mother and father in-law Mary and Mike Dolhan.
