Irene Margaret Aubrecht
1921-2020
Irene Margaret Aubrecht, 99, of
Antigonish, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully at St.
Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish, on Saturday,
November 28, 2020. Born on July 1, 1921 in North Sydney, Nova Scotia,
she was the daughter of the late John Joseph & Jeanette
(O’Quinn) McAlister.
Irene met the love of her life, Yarmil, in North Sydney and
they spent their courtship, dancing, singing, skating, skiing and
hiking to pick blueberries before Yarmil left to serve in WWII. Irene
had a business degree and worked in Halifax at Cline’s in
her earlier years. She and Yarmil later moved and settled in
Antigonish in 1951. Irene was a devout Roman Catholic and was involved
in many church groups, including the Legion of Mary, Charismatic
Catholic Religious group and the CWL. She was known for her kindness,
spending countless hours visiting patients at St. Martha’s
and residents of the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home. Known for her quick
wit and sense of humor, Irene was loved by many and always had a kind
word, a smile and a hug for everyone she met.
Irene treasured her time spent at Cribbin’s rocks
with her family, swimming in the ocean, picking mussels and roasting
marshmallows on the fire as the sun set. Irene loved watching her
children and grandchildren participate in sports, music, dance and
theatre. Baking and crafting with her grandchildren also brought her
tremendous joy.
In her later years and in declining health, Irene was able to
remain in her home thanks to the care provided by her daughter Theresa
and her grandson Shannon. Irene received an immeasurable amount of
love and compassion from Theresa and Shannon as they tirelessly
provided 24 hour care, took her on outings to the beach she so loved
and always made her feel safe and secure.
Irene is survived by her children Madonna (Bill) Maher,
Theresa, John (Mary-Jane), Grace (Mike) Holobo, Mary (Mark) Ballard,
Peter (Cheri), Vianney (Sharon) and Paul (Michelle), her grandchildren
Hugh, Keri, Fraser, Katie, Alexandra, Christina, Kacey, Rory, Tyler,
Shannon, Olivia, John-Vianney, Patti, Jenny, Jamie, Sarah, Vivika,
Jake, Nicole, Emily, Christian, Mary-Tess, Liam, Connor and 13
great-grandchildren. Irene and Yarmil’s love story ended
after 42 years when he was taken from her suddenly in an automobile
accident. Irene was also pre-deceased by her eldest son Karl
(Catherine), and her siblings Cyril, Raymond, Gus, Mary, Jennie, and
Peter.
