Obituary of Ruth Campbell
Ruth was born May 6th, 1919, in the middle of the Spanish Flu pandemic. She left the world on November 6th, 2020 amid the next world-wide pandemic. Ruth Mae (Murray) Campbell was born to Robert and Margaret (Calder) Murray in Stellarton, Nova Scotia.
She is survived by her daughter Jeanne (Campbell) Dorie, New Glasgow; grandchildren, Jason Dorie (Sara Michener), Danbury, CT; Heather Carrier (Raymond), St. John’s NF; Holly Dorie (James Sutton), Vancouver, BC and great-grandson Evan Carrier.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents, and husband of fifty-nine years, John Campbell, sister Thelma MacMillan, and son-in-law Jim Dorie.
Ruth was active in community events, often being tasked to take on projects by her husband John who would say, « Ruth can do it. » She curled, played golf, loved music, played the piano and painted beautiful pictures. She was a gracious hostess and tried to make everyone feel welcome in her home. She usually succeeded.
Westville, Nova Scotia, was home for 63 years. The last eight years of her life were lived at Ivey’s Terrace Nursing Home in Trenton. She continued to endeavor to make visitors welcome to her new home. The staff at Ivey’s Terrace were wonderful to her and it felt like home. At 101, she’d had a good long happy life and was wearing out, ready to leave us. Her wish was that we not be sad. That is a difficult wish to grant.
To honour Ruth’s request, and due to the current pandemic, there will be no visitation or funeral service. True to form Ruth had one last community service gift in mind. She donated her body to the Dalhousie University Medical School. They have accepted her gift and will eventually return her ashes to be buried beside her husband at Heatherdale Memorial Gardens in Sylvester.
