Obituary
Alma Marguerite Bird (nee Horne).
April 7th, 1929 – November 4, 2020, age 91.
Alma was born in Oyen, Alberta, on April 7, 1929, to Floyd Ellery Horne born Bark Shanty, Pennsylvania and Susan Warwick born Pickering, Yorkshire, England. Loving mother to Daniel, John, Joan and Michael and grandmother to Alan Jossul, David and Miranda Nelson.
Alma was predeceased by her sister Kay Cardinal, brothers Bill, Harry and Jack Horne and her eldest daughter Deborah Susan Nelson.
She married Frederick Thomas Bird on August 8, 1951, in Calgary and were together for an amazing 69 years.
Alma lived a very full life! Prior to marriage, she was a switchboard operator for Alberta Government Telephones. After marriage, she was a homemaker, worked in retail at a local drugstore, became a real estate agent and unit clerk at the Foothills Hospital.
She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Edith Cavell Chapter, for more than 60 years, becoming the Worthy Matron for a term.
She was an accomplished artist painting in oil and watercolor and enjoyed this hobby immensely. She became prolific in her 70’s and 80’s turning out works of art on a weekly basis. She also knitted and enjoyed her Ipad in her later years. She also was an avid bridge player for many years.
She delved into the family tree and travelled several times to England to meet many relatives around the Yorkshire area.
She loved to travel and ventured to Europe, Mexico, Alaska, and Australia twice. She and Fred were Snowbirds spending 15 winters in Mesa, Arizona.
She loved to entertain, and the house was often filled with dinner parties, Grey Cup parties, kid’s birthdays and just about any excuse to have friends and family over.
Alma had many friends and family who loved her dearly. She lived the majority of her life in Calgary and the last 20 years in Okotoks.
We would like to thank the nurses and staff that took such loving care of Alma at Walden Agecare. Rest peacefully. We will miss you so very much.
