Isabella Ramsay Watson Whyte Pflieger died peacefully on Saturday, October 24, 2020 in the company of her family, surrounded by their love.
Ella was born August 20, 1932 in her grandmother’s home in Rattray, Scotland and grew up in Clunie, Scotland. Her parents were Isabella (nee Ramsay) and William Watson. She always maintained a fierce love for her homeland and regaled her family and friends with stories.
She emigrated to Canada in 1954 with her husband Alan Whyte (Bankfoot, Scotland).
Ella stayed home to raise their three daughters. During this time she was an active volunteer with Girl Guides of Canada, canvassed for charities, worked on elections and for the Census. Once the girls were in their teens, Ella went back to work, working in the dining room of Hillfield-Strathallan College, Hamilton, until her retirement in 1997.
In 1989, Ella married Alexander Pflieger of Mount Hope, Ontario.
Ella had a way with people. She was forthright, outgoing and smart. She was a ball of energy. She was warm-hearted. She was always welcoming. She had a strong sense of right and wrong. As her daughter you could never complain about your mum because your friends all loved her.
Ella loved her garden. Many people would stop to admire the gardens she created in her beloved home on Mountain Crest Avenue in Hamilton. She also loved the opportunities for a “wee blether” that it gave her.
Ella was predeceased by both husbands. She is survived by her daughters, Catherine Gallagher (Harris), Maureen Rockwood, and Eileen Jones-Whyte (Mark) and her grand-children, Alison, Blair, Shannon, Reilly, Naomi and Ramsay. She is also survived by her step-sons Kirk and Mark (Tammy) Pflieger and their families, as well as by her siblings in Scotland, Jeannie Paul, William Watson and Irene Mackie.
When the pandemic restrictions allow, a memorial service will be held in Chedoke Presbyterian Church in Hamilton.
If you desire to give a donation in memory of Ella, we ask that you consider the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada or the Royal Botanical Gardens.
