Obituary of Roberta Alice Williamson
On Oct. 22, 2020, Roberta A. (Bertie) Williamson left us to be with those she loved who had gone before her. Born on April 19, 1918 to the late Martin A. & Lila M. (Howland) Reed, she was the youngest of their five children.
Bertie was predeceased by her parents, her husband Cecil E. Williamson, her son Grey Irwin, sisters Agnes Reed & Mabel Stewart (Carl/d), brothers Lawrence (Louise/d) & Wilmot Reed, step-daughter Margaret Stonner & her husband Dr. Fred Stonner, and step-son Allan Williamson.
Bertie will be remembered with love and many smiles by her daughter Joyce Reinhart; grandchildren Matthew Reinhart, Bill (Sue) Stonner, Nancy (Doug) Drischler, Bob (Jennifer) Stonner, John Philip Stonner, Edward (Heather) Stonner, Dean (Kharissma) Williamson, Tony Williamson, and Heather Williamson; 9 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bertie grew up in Leverville, Charlotte Co., NB where she attended the local school and then studied at the Provincial Normal School in Fredericton , graduating in 1937. This was the beginning of a 35-year vocation that saw her teaching in various schools in Charlotte County , from one-room country schools with eight grades to her last years teaching grade one at Vincent Massey Elementary School in St. Andrews . She retired in 1977, but not before being awarded the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal for her work using the Pitman Initial Teaching Alphabet to teach her students to read & write stories. Bertie was also actively involved with her Church, was a 63-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, loved a game of bridge, always tuned in to watch curling, and claims to have eaten more tea biscuits than anyone else from Charlotte County .
There will be no visitation by request of the family. A private Memorial Service will take place at The Drive Baptist Church , Fredericton , NB , with Rev. Gordon Cook officiating. Interment will take place in Oak Bay Cemetery . For those who wish to honour Bertie’s memory, remembrances may be made to The Drive Baptist Church Building Fund or a charity of the donor’s choice.
