Barry Lawrence Tunney, born 28 April 1940, died 7 October 2020, son of Thomas Edward Tunney and Olive Elizabeth Clost. He earned a B. Comm from the University of Ottawa, an LLB from Queen’s University and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1967.
Barry was predeceased by his siblings: Norma Ryan Lindsay, Doreen Lalonde and Jim. Together, they were part of the fourth generation of Tunneys to grow up in the Tunney’s Pasture neighbourhood of Ottawa.
Barry is mourned by Teresa (née Calnan), his wife of 57 years, his children: Jim (Rita), Tom (Sarah Boudreau), Janice, Brant (Andrea), Bruce (Valérie Vigneault), Kevin (Mélanie Stewart), Kate (Dan Medland) and 15 grandchildren. Barry is also mourned by a large extended family and a wealth of life-long friends.
Barry was a man of faith, integrity, humility and generosity. This quiet essence nurtured life-long friendships and imbued his seven children with a strong sense of ethics and commitment to duty. His love of music and pride in his Irish heritage begat generations of musicians and fuelled family celebrations over decades. Barry was a servant of the law. He practiced law in Ottawa for 50 years, faithfully guiding generations of families through the legal challenges of life and death.
A Funeral Mass for Barry will be celebrated at St. Basil’s Church on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at 11:00 am followed by interment at Notre Dame Cemetery. Due to the current restrictions of Covid-19 mandates, a limited number of people are permitted in the Church. Face masks are required to attend the service.
