BRODERICK William Joseph In the early hours of Friday, July 10th, William (Bill) Joseph Broderick passed away at 97 years of age after a short stay in the Palliative Care Unit of the Miller Centre. He is pre-deceased by his mother and father, Bridget and William Patrick Broderick; his in-laws, Stella and Edward Barbour; and his seven siblings, including Frank Broderick, Joan Redmond, and Margaret Ronayne. His wife of 57 years, Winnifred (Barbour), his daughter Carol (Russell), and his son David (Jennifer) are deeply saddened by his passing. He will also be missed by his many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Bill spent his whole career at CN rail. To express his artistic side, he painted and played music. He had an excellent ear and loved to play piano and sing with friends and family. Though he never had the opportunity to pursue advanced formal education, he was a well-read, deeply intellectual autodidact. He adored poetry and could recite many poems by heart, and the family relished his dramatic readings of greeting cards. He loved nature and walked the MUN Botanical Park and Signal Hill trails with Carol into his eighties. He was always quick with a joke, even up to the last few days.
The family thanks the Community Health and Palliative Care teams for their compassion and professionalism during Bill’s brief illness.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation and a funeral mass will be held at Carnell’s at the end of July, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, numbers are limited. If you would like to attend, please contact Winnifred or Carol.
Donations in Bill’s memory may be made to the Canadian Red Cross.
“Play it again, Bill!”
