Daniel Martin Finch
June 05, 2020
My brother Daniel Martin Finch passed away June 5, 2020. He was 70 years old and second born in a large family of five. Dan was born in London, Ontario, and spent the first half of his life living in Ontario. He worked locally at a cheese factory and then decided he wanted to serve the Lord at Blue Water Conference Grounds in Wallaceburg, Ontario. There he helped with maintenance, but his big job was keeping the lawns perfectly cut. He loved being outside and riding the lawn mower around. After the conference grounds closed, his next big move was to Halifax, Nova Scotia, to work at the Peoples Gospel Hour. Here he found a close group of friends and a great church, Missionary Bible Church, that he faithfully attended. They became his family when we were far away. Thank you to everyone there.
My memories of Daniel included his love for books and more books! I think he knew every book by author and title. It amazed me. He also loved to take long walks, which in his later years he couldn’t do because of a bad knee. He loved the city of Halifax. It was his home, and he didn’t want to leave. During my last visit, we talked about his coming back to Ontario, but his response was “Please just bury me here. It’s my home now.” He loved working on family genealogy and touring cemeteries when he was on vacation in Ontario. His research was amazing, and now I must carry it on.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I asked how he was keeping busy, and his reply was, “I have a book and my Bible, so I’m good.” He had little but was always thankful to God and others for everything given to him. He will also be remembered for his love of Coca-Cola. Diabetic or not, he loved it! In his younger years, it was the large 2-litre bottles, and recently it was just a glass or two of Diet Coke. Daniel had a great memory and loved to share old family stories. He also enjoyed telling about his bus adventures to Tancook Island. I have many childhood memories of trying to beat him in a game of chess. I hardly ever won, but in my defence, I was 8 years younger. I’m sure my mom was just happy Daniel kept me busy and out of her hair!
Daniel will be missed but will live on in our hearts. We are reassured he is in heaven with his Saviour, and we will see him again. Graveside service and burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday July 2, 2020 in Mount Hermon Cemetery , Victoria Road, Dartmouth.
Rest in peace, Daniel.
