Obituary
Clara Quintal de Nobrega entered eternal rest on January 10, 2020 surrounded by her family.
She was born on August 29, 1924 in Eiras, Caniço, Madeira, Portugal; the daughter of Ludovina Correia and João “Batata” Quintal. Throughout her life, the devotion to her faith strengthened her in hard times, helped her care for others and provided her with courage and comfort until the very end.
She married her childhood sweetheart, Fernando De Nobrega (1924-2011), in November 1950. She always said that she was very lucky that her husband was such a “good man”. They had two children, José Nicolau (1953) and Maria Fernanda (1955). In her children, she instilled her core values: humility, commitment and integrity.
She started a new life with her family in Toronto in 1959. Never one to forget her family, it wasn’t long before she sponsored her siblings and welcomed them and friends into her home to create a foundation for a new life in Canada.
In 1980, Clara and Fernando welcomed a son in law, Antonio Pedrosa and a daughter in law Joanne Donovan to their family. From these marriages they were blessed with five grandchildren: Andrea, Nicole, Sara, Jason and Jaclyn. “Thanks-a God!” She experienced joy in teaching them the tenets of our faith and served as a shining example of how to live a good and moral life.
It’s because of her dedication to all of those special in her life, that she will be missed by her last surviving sister, Maria Isabel, her children, grandchildren, dozens of nieces and nephews, friends, the St. Mary’s community and neighbours.
As Clara lived her life with service and devotion to her villages in Madeira and Toronto and would want us to remember Christ’s words, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind.”
Visitation will take place at the Cardinal Funeral Home Bathurst Chapel (366 Bathurst St.) on Monday, January 13, 2020 from 5-9pm. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 10:30am at St. Mary’s Church ( 588 Adelaide St. W.). Entombment to follow at Prospect Cemetery (1450 St. Clair Ave. W).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Clara’s name to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
