John’s Obituary
VERRAN, John age 64 of Meadowvale, NS- It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Roger Verran on June 2, 2020. Johnny was born February 16, 1956 in Digby, Nova Scotia to Harry and Connie Verran.
Johnny will always be remembered as a loving, devoted, and exceptional son, brother, husband, father and “Grampy”. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Debbie (Morrison) of Meadowvale, and children J.J. (Sarah) of Ottawa, Adam (Elizabeth) of Torbrook, Kirk (Jenise) of Meadowvale, Luke (Lindsay) of Meadowvale, Kaitlyn (Adam) Gorman of Meadowvale, and 11 beautiful grandchildren Mya, Megan, Madelyn, Norah, Thomas, Edwin, Gavin, Connor, Hattie, Willow, and Levi. Siblings Cathy (Paul) McGuire of Kingston, Joanne (Bronson) Rafuse of Bridgetown, Jimmy (Tammy) of Greenwood, Margie MacFarlane of Canaan, Gerry (Patti) of Yarmouth, and Allie (Greg) Gillis of Meadowvale, in-laws Christina Fox, Sandy (Frank) Reese, Linda Phinney, Peter (Michelle) Morrison all of Bridgetown, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his infant son Bruce, father Harry, and brothers-in-law George Fox, Mark MacFarlane, and Carl Phinney.
Although Johnny moved around as the son of a service member, the Annapolis Valley will forever be Johnny’s home. He graduated from Bridgetown Regional High School in 1974, and moved on to receive a Bachelor of Science from St. Mary’s University and then a Bachelor and Master’s of Education from Acadia University. He married his high school sweetheart, Debbie, when he was 20 years old. Family was always the most important thing in Johnny’s life; he was most happy and proud when surrounded by his grandchildren.
Johnny was a proud educator, vice principal, and principal in the Annapolis Valley for 33 years. He was also a dedicated and accomplished hockey player and coach. His love for hockey started at a young age as he quickly became a die-hard Habs fan and was extremely happy they squeaked into the playoffs this year. Johnny was a true believer in giving everyone a shot and valued hard work and dedication, which he instilled into every player he coached.
Despite receiving a silver medal at the Canada Games in 1975, playing at several University National Hockey Championships, and coaching the Telus Cup Valley Major Midget team, his fondest memories were teaching his grandchildren how to skate on the pond. His children, grandchildren, and whole community, whom he had such an impact on over the years, will forever carry on his love of hockey. If you were lucky enough to know Johnny, you know the lasting legacy that he has left behind.

A private family service will take place in St. Monica’s Roman Catholic Church, Middleton. Rev. Father John MacPherson officiating. Due to public gathering restrictions, a live stream of the service will be available to be viewed through the funeral home website ‘Live Stream’ option beginning at 12:55 p.m., ADT., Thursday, August 6. A private family interment will take place in St. Alphonus Roman Catholic Cemetery, Bridgetown.
