Obituary
Erma Jean Wagner (Okotoks)
August 2, 1933 – May 17, 2020
On Sunday, May 17, 2020 Erma Jean Wagner (nee Cross), our loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away at the age of 86.
Erma was born on August 2, 1933 on the family farm near Kipling, Saskatchewan. She grew up with wonderful, loving parents and two beautiful sisters who were so very dear to her heart.
When Erma entered grade eleven her parents retired from farming and moved the family to Regina. Upon graduating high school Erma worked for General Motors of Canada, working her way up to the position of executive secretary. It was here that she met her future husband, Lawrence Wagner. They were married in 1955 and were blessed to have spent 64 wonderful years together.
Erma was a very loving, talented, hardworking woman and she brought all of this energy into creating a home and raising a family. Throughout her life she was very active within the community, United Church, and UCW.
Many happy times were spent with Mom providing Sunday dinners of roast beef and apple pie, family holidays traveling in our trailer, and then time spent at our cottage at Kannata Valley.
Once her daughters were older Erma began a second career, studying to obtain her real estate license and spent several years working for CMHC as an appraiser. In 1986 they moved to Edmonton where Lawrence completed his career with GM and they began their retirement. In 1994 they moved to High River, a community and lifestyle that they embraced wholeheartedly.
Retirement was filled with family times, active winters in Arizona, some travels, and several cruises. In Edmonton and High River, Erma volunteered at the Misericordia and High River hospitals.
Erma’s last two years were spent at the Heartland retirement residence in Okotoks, where together with Lawrence, she thrived. True to Erma’s very essence, she took hold of every opportunity there to connect with people, be a part of the wonderful community, and enjoy all that life had to offer.
Erma was a kind, compassionate, loving and resilient woman, who will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived and loved by her husband Lawrence of Okotoks, AB, sister Shirley Butterworth (Jack) of Vancouver, BC, and daughters Cheryl (Vince) of Calgary, AB and Lorna (Darcy) of Okotoks, AB. She was blessed with and dearly loved her five grandchildren, Matthew Rodych (Courtney), Jennifer Galdon (Luis), Justin Rodych (Angel), Maya Krett and Brennan Krett. Her great grandchildren Lilly, Timothy, Harrison, Victoria, Maddy and Grayson provided Erma with immense happiness. She will also be fondly remembered by nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents George and Mary Ann Cross of Regina and her sister Emma Hodgins (Bob) of Calgary.
A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the CNIB Foundation.
