Obituary for
Brian Campbell Leader
Leader, Brian Campbell – age 77, Truro.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Brian Campbell Leader on May 11, 2020 in Gables Lodge, Amherst, NS.
Brian was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia in 2015 and, until December of 2019, continued to be active, socialize with his family, enjoy coffee with his good buddies, Dana, Dave and Brian, and walk with his new-found dog, Jolene, whom he loved.
Brian was born on August 15, 1942 in London, Ontario to the late Hugh (Bud) and Emily (Campbell) Leader. Brian and his family moved to Sydney and then to Glace Bay when he was 12 years and thus became a “Caper”.
He was owner /operator of the Commercial St. Bookstore in Glace Bay for a number of years before beginning a life-long career as a self-employed Sales Agent for approximately 45 years. Brian represented many national Canadian companies over the years but specifically Suntec Optics. He was highly respected by all who had the privilege of knowing him and doing business with him. All his deals were finalized with a handshake – his word was his commitment to you.
Brian was known as “The Sunglass Man” and always introduced himself as, “I’m Brian Leader, been a Leader all my life, pleased to meet you.”
During all his years travelling the four Atlantic Provinces, Brian was always accompanied by his beloved and constant companions, his dogs, namely Misty, Peaches, Brandy and Tess. Brian and his dogs were well known from one end of the Maritimes to the other. He could be seen walking his “girls” wherever he was, at home in Truro or selling sunglasses in every corner of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
There are many adjectives to describe Brian: caring, compassionate, loving, honourable, thoughtful, kind, honest, trustworthy, highly intelligent, funny, a man of his word and many, many more too numerous to mention. He truly was “one of a kind”. To know Brian was to love him.
Brian was truly a family man who adored his family and was always there for them. He is survived by his wife, Diane (Tracey) and his children, Pam Leader and Kim Leader of Glace Bay, Todd (Alma) Leader of Timberlea, Michelle (Mickey) MacKenzie of Antigonish and Lynn Durtnall of Truro; his grandchildren, Ali Leader, Timberlea, Brian (Rhiannon) Leader, Timberlea, Emily O’Leary, Glace Bay and Jacklyn Geldart, Bedford. Brian is also survived by his sister, Ann (Ron) Farrell of Sunridge, Ontario and nieces, Debbie and Jennifer. Also survived by his very special, caring and loving cousin, Sandy and her husband, Fred Stuchberry of St. Catharine’s, Ontario, as well as very close friend and neighbour of 39 years, Judy Nicholson.
A very sincere and heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff at Gables Lodge, Amherst, who treated Brian and his family with such tender, loving care and respect. We are forever deeply grateful.
In memoriam donations may be made to the SPCA or a charity of your choice, if so desired.
Cremation has taken place. Due to COVID – 19 restrictions, there will be no visitation or service. A celebration of Brian’s wonderful life will take place at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com
