H. Swabey Jelley
1945-2020
Jelley – Peacefully at
Moncton Hospital on Sunday, May 3, 2020, H. Swabey Jelley of Moncton
and formerly of O’Leary and Summerside, PEI passed away with
family by his side. Born in Alberton on October 17, 1945, he was the
only son of Earle and Kathleen (Henderson) Jelley and beloved husband
of almost 50 years to Elizabeth (Platts) Jelley. He was also
the proud Dad of Peter (Allison) Jelley of Toronto, Mark (Kimberley)
Jelley of Charlottetown, Matthew (Lindsey Spencer) Jelley of North
Granville, and John Jelley of Moncton. Much loved Grampie to Benjamin,
Zachary, Jonah, and Carys Jelley, Liam, Madeleine, Ethan, and Cecily
Jelley, and step grampie to Kale Parnham, and Brendan and Cohen
Spencer. Devoted brother-in-law of Carman Dennis, David (Paula)
Platts, and Amy Platts, all of PEI. Much loved uncle to nine nieces
and nephews. Beside his parents and in-laws, he was predeceased by his
only sister, Lucy Anne Dennis, and his brother-in-law, Donald Platts.
After graduating from Acadia University (BSc) and UNB (B.Ed, M.Ed) ,
Swabey spent over thirty years teaching Math and Co-op Education in
Summerside schools. Upon retiring from Three Oaks Senior High in 1999,
he took on a second career with Magic Mountain in Moncton. After his
stroke twenty years ago,he conntinued his almost daily visits to Magic
Mountain, where he enjoyed many happy times with his family and the
staff. He continued to visit Cavendish when he was able and maintained
an avid interest in the family businesses there. Always an avid
Canadiens fan and a proud hockey dad and grandad, he was actively
involved in minor hockey, community and school organizations in
Summerside and beyond. He faithfully served his church at the local,
provincial, and regional levels throughout the years. He and his
family spent many happy summers camping and making memories at Marco
Polo Land in Cavendish. Upon moving to Moncton full-time in 2014, he
became a faithful member of Hillside Baptist Church. He leaves a
legacy of unwavering faith, witness and resilience for his family and
friends. The family wishes to thank all those who have faithfully
supported him over the years and especially since his illness –
devoted family, pastors, friends, colleagues, neighbours, extra mural
nurses and physio, and medical staff who were with us over the years
both in PEI and in Moncton. Special thanks to caregiver Sue Collier
and therapist Julie Lawson who assisted his loving wife Elizabeth to
enable him to remain at home over the past few years. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to Hillside Baptist Church
(hillsidemoncton.org/give), Summerside Baptist Church
