Murphy, William Vincent
August 1, 1936 – April 23, 2020
William Vincent Murphy, 83, of Harbour Main, Newfoundland, passed away on April 23, 2020, at the Palliative Care Unit at The Miller Centre, St. John’s, Newfoundland. Vince was surrounded with love from his daughters in his final days before passing.
He was born to James and Teresa Murphy in Harbour Main, Newfoundland on Aug. 1, 1936. He grew up in the small, charming community in the family home located near the ocean. Vince was a loving and caring father to three daughters; Linda (Jack) of Saint John, New Brunswick, Debby (Daryl) of Lethbridge, Alberta and Barbara of Vancouver, British Columbia. He was also a proud grandfather to his grandsons; Brian, Jaryd and Evan. Vince is survived by his sisters; Marie (Leo), Margaret, and Gert (Gerry). He was predeceased by his brothers Patrick and James (Anatasia).
He was a treasure of a human, loved by many and he touched many hearts. He will be missed by his many friends and family. He will be especially missed by his companion and loving friend, Theresa Morrissey.
Vince was loyal, caring, always kind to others and he was a no-nonsense kind of fella. He was talented with many skills which employed him in several professions throughout his life, including auto body painter, carpenter, miner, property manager and chief cook and bottle washer. He was creative in coming up with ideas which resulted in some amazing projects he constructed and completed over his lifetime. He had a love for growing gardens (which usually contained rows and rows of potatoes) and collecting and planting trees. He loved to move and transplant trees throughout his property and when travelling brought trees back from other parts of Canada to plant in his yard. He had a great love of dogs and had several long term dog companions over his years. The last one being his beloved collie-mix, Lady, who he missed dearly when she passed in 2015.
He left Newfoundland in his teens making stops to work and live in Ontario, Labrador, Alberta, Northwest Territories and finally settling in Northern Saskatchewan where he married Kathleen and they raised their family.
After residing in Saskatchewan for several decades, in 1990 Vince returned to Newfoundland and spent time living in Harbour Main and then Bacon Cove. After several strokes in 2016 he transitioned to Tobin’s Guest home where he resided for the last 4 years. While living at Tobin’s Guest home he was able to spend time with his older sister, Marie, who is also a resident at the home.
Vince’s kids are very grateful for all of the kind words, support, thoughts and prayers from family and friends during his illness. A special thank you to the nurses who cared for him during his time as a palliative patient at the Health Sciences Centre, as well as, the team and nurses at the Palliative Care Unit at The Miller Centre. Also, a very special thank you to the staff and residents of Tobin’s Guest Home who loved and cared for him for the last 4 years.
Vince’s final resting place will be with a view of the ocean at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Harbour Main, Newfoundland near his mother, father, brothers and nephew.
Due to current restrictions there will be no visitation or a public service. A memorial landmark to Vince is being decided upon by his family and will be finalized in the near future. To receive a printed memorial booklet for Vince and to receive updates on his memorial landmark, email his daughter Barb at memoriesofvince2020@gmail.com. Please provide your name and mailing address in your email. A printed memorial booklet will be sent to you in the mail and information about a memorial landmark emailed to you once it is finalized.
The family is suggesting in lieu of flowers or donations, to plant a tree in memory of Vince. As he loved trees and nature and they feel this would be a fitting way to memorialize him.
