Born and raised on a farm just south of Mitchell on Highway 23 in Fullarton Township, Norma graduated from Mitchell District High School and teacher’s college at Stratford Normal School. She taught for three years at schools in Fullarton Township, Kitchener, and Hamilton. Then after meeting Mervin at a jitney dance and marrying on July 5, 1947 they moved to McKillop Township to farm and raise their family over the next 50 years.
Norma was very active throughout her life walking to and from school, skating, playing softball, bowling, and driving her children to dance, hockey, baseball, soccer and more. She was a dedicated member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church teaching Sunday School and as an active member of the LCW. She canvassed yearly for the March of Dimes and later in life she enjoyed arts and crafts, crocheting, reading the local papers, and coloring. She was an excellent cook serving up hearty meals including fresh fruit pie nightly for the hired hands, and Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners often for 30 plus family and guests. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
Norma and family extend sincere thanks and appreciation to all who visited, called and provided care and compassion during her many years at Mitchell Nursing Home.
A private family service has taken place. A Celebration of Norma’s life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Brodhagen, Mitchell Nursing Home Enrichment Fund or the charity of one’s choice may be made at LockhartFuneralHome.com.
