Johanna « Joanne » (Veldhuis) Guetter passed from this life to the next on Thursday, November 14. 2019 at The West Haldimand General Hospital, Hagersville. Shortly after a cheerful breakfast, she had a massive stroke, and breathed her last breath about 12 hours later. She will be fondly remembered for her generous spirit, her love of family, and her passion for people in need.
Joanne was born on November 25, 1928 in the village of Holten in the Netherlands. The oldest of six, she studied psychiatric nursing after World War II. Shortly after completing her training, she and her family immigrated to Canada. There she met her future husband Peter Guetter. They married and moved to Fenwick, Ontario, where they raised 7 children.
Joanne loved singing, flowers, knitting, baking, and keeping an orderly home. She also loved being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She remained in close contact with her friends, brothers, and sisters. She was always ready to share an apple, a chocolate bar, a baked goody, and a friendly, cheerful smile with anyone she knew. Joanne loved Jesus and trusted in God completely. She had great compassion, especially for children in need.
After the passing of her husband about 20 years ago, she began a single life in a retirement community near Jarvis. She made many friends and cherished her independence.
Joanne died about a week before she would have celebrated her 91st birthday. She was much loved, is sadly missed, and will continue to guide and inspire those who knew and loved her. She is survived by her 7 children, 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and hundreds of in-laws, siblings, cousins, friends and neighbours.
A memorial service will be held in the Jarvis Christian Reformed Church on Friday, November 22, 2019 at 11:00 am. A reception and celebration of Joanne’s life will follow immediately after the service. Friends are invited to join family to lay her body to rest in the Hillside Cemetery in Ridgeville on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 1:00 pm.
