Douglas Anthony Smith passed away peacefully with family at his side on October 7, 2019 in Mountain Lake. Doug is survived by his loving wife Phyllis, children Doug Smith (Sue), Heather Shannon and her children Michael Shannon and Kimberlee Shannon and stepdaughters Karen Bennett (Chuck), Heather Olynyk (Gordon) and grandchildren Carley Bennett Naka (Ross), Dylan Bennett, McKenna Bennett and sister Muriel Hinitt and many nieces and nephews.
Doug was the youngest child of Robert and Esther Smith (Habegard) and had many happy memories and stories of growing up on Third Street in Nelson. After graduation he followed in his father footsteps and began his 38-year career with BC Tel as District Manager East Kootenay, Division Customer Service Manager East and West Kootenays, and retiring as General Customer Service Manager Head Office in Vancouver.
Doug was a Charter Member of the Cranbrook Junior Chamber of Commerce, served one term on the Cranbrook School Board and was a member of Rotary International for 40 plus years. After retirement and moving back to Nelson, Doug was President and Treasurer of the strata council for High Street Place for many years.
Summers at Queens Bay were special times for Doug and the Smith families. Doug learned to play golf as a young man and continued to play golf and enjoy his Lifetime Membership at Balfour Golf Course.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kelly Mieske and the third floor nursing staff at KLH, Broader Horizons staff, and Dr. Janz and the staff at Mountain Lake for the good and compassionate care he received.
