ROOKE, Douglas Carl
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Douglas Carl Rooke
announces his passing at Hospice Wellington, Guelph on Sunday,
November 17, 2019 at the age of 85. Born on June 7, 1934. Doug was
the youngest of 13 children who all predeceased him along with his
mother Bertha and father John. He was also predeceased by his
father-in-law George Coverdale. Doug was an energetic, dedicated hard
working Transport Driver; serving many years with both CN Railways and
Koch Transport, in the era of C.B. Radio he was known as the
“Lonesome Trucker” and the “Candyman”, as he
supplied sweets to his many contacts on his delivery route. In his
early teens , he was a member of the Preston Ontario Bantam All
Ontario Champions 1947-48. This love of skating would keep him
hitting the ice into his 80’s. In addition to skating his
attachment to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays never
diminished. Dad loved dogs. When he wasn’t walking his dog, he
could be seen with his loving wife Eileen, travelling on foot through
the Galt core and surrounding trails. Eileen gets the credit for
keeping Dad on a proper diet and exercise. She also was the
“Travel Planner” for many cruises. Doug is survived by
his loving wife Eileen of 53 years, mother-in-law Agnes Coverdale and
brother-in-law Robert Coverdale and sister-in-law Margaret Rooke.
