Reverend Charles M. Mathieu
With sorrow, the family announces his death on Monday, October 21, 2019 at Health Sciences North, Sudbury.
Father Charles was born on May 2, 1937 to Rosan and Mose Matthieu, both predeceased. He was also predeceased by his sisters Veronica Fior (husband Louis predeceased) and Mary Bernadette Matthieu. He is survived by brothers Cyril of Rock Lake (wife Doris predeceased) and Parnell of Killarney (wife Joanne predeceased). He is also survived by his sister Anna Ouelette (husband Don predeceased) as well as nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, parishioners of St. John the Evangelist, Garson and St. Bernadine of Siena, Skead. Father was in the first graduating class of St. Charles College and prior to beginning studies for the priesthood the trained as a teacher and taught for two years for the Sudbury Catholic School Board. He studied philosophy and theology at St. Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto. Father Charles was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Alexander Carter, Bishop of the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie, on May 13, 1966 at his home parish, Holy Trinity in Sudbury’s Donovan neighbourhood. As an assistant priest, he served the Parishes of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Sudbury, and St. John the Evangelist, Garson. He was appointed Pastor of St. Joseph, the Worker Parish in Sault Ste. Marie and later of Our Lady of Sorrows in Sturgeon Falls. For the next eight years he served in various parishes throughout the diocese as the replacement for priests who were on sabbatical. Father Charles returned to St. John the Evangelist Parish in Garson as Pastor, where he remained for eighteen years until his retirement in July of 2011. We are grateful to the many people who supported Charles throughout his years of ministry and in his final illness.
Visitation at St. John the Evangelist Church, Garson on Sunday, October 27, 2019 from 2pm-9pm. Prayer Vigil at 7pm Sunday.
Funeral Mass at
St. John the Evangelist Church, Garson on Monday, October 28, 2019 at 10am.
Burial at a later date in All Saints Cemetery, Killarney.
