Nelle Penny passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, October 5, 2019 surrounded by her loving family, familiar belongings, and happy memories. Nelle was predeceased by her husband, Gil Penny, in 2003. She is survived by their three children Gilda (Roger) Pilon, Saskatoon; Murray (Lynda) Penny, Regina; and Mark (Cindy) Penny, Regina. Also surviving are her beloved grandchildren Alexa (Justin) Haynes-Pilon; Melody (Jared Davidson) Penny, Tyson and Ryker; Alannah (Gareth Harding-Russell) Penny; Tyler (Alexandra Duczek) Penny; Brett (Frances Kurtenbach) Penny; and Lynda’s children and grandchildren, Katie (Brady) Bloor and June, Alex, Cooper and Zoey; Tom (Lindsay Cameron) Frasz; Abbie (Ryan Unruh) Frasz and Violet. Nelle loved animals of all sorts and was much beloved by all of the family “fur babies”.
Nelle was born in the Highland district near Kipling, SK on December 20, 1926 to Halvor and Rose (Klein) Knutson. Nelle was predeceased by her parents, as well as by her siblings Tulley Knutson, Tillie (Alec) Dick, Ole (Evelyn) Knutson, Enga Knutson, and Clare (Bob) McKee. She is survived by her sister Donna (John) Jager. Nelle also was predeceased by her parents-in-law, Richard and Marion (Morrison) Penny, and her brothers and sisters-in-law, Allan and Jean Penny, and Doug and Ellen Penny. Nelle enjoyed staying in touch with members of her extended family, and looked forward to visits and phone calls from her special nieces and nephews.
Throughout her life, Nelle was an energetic and hard-working person who enjoyed people and made lasting friendships. She spent time working for the Co-ops in Kipling and Abernethy before marrying Gil Penny on October 27, 1951 and dedicating herself to being a farmer, a parent, and an active member of the community. Nelle was a renowned cook and prizewinning baker; no visitor ever left her house hungry! She was an active volunteer for many years with the Abernethy Agricultural Society, Abernethy Dinner Theatre, Meals on Wheels, Home Care, Knox United Church, and innumerable other causes. She was highly involved in supporting her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting, dramatic and musical pursuits. Nelle was a longtime correspondent for the Melville Advance and the Fort Times-Exchange, and took her love of telling peoples’ stories to her Regina home, where she contributed to the monthly Wintergreene Buzz. Nelle also was a proud lifetime member of Weight Watchers, and was a group leader for several years.
Celebration of Life to honour Nelle will be held at Knox United Church, Abernethy, SK on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Brian Mee officiating. Interment will follow in Abernethy Cemetery. Funeral arrangements in care of Alternatives Funeral & Cremation Services, Regina, SK.
