On the golden afternoon of October 19, Maria Mariga (nee Fontanel), at the age of 95, slipped from this worldly plane to the next. She was guided by her son Walter, husband Bruno, and canine companions Bobby and Poochie. No doubt her parents Amabile (Bisotto) and Antonio Fontanel and her siblings Luigi, Giovanni, Desiderio, Antonio, Antonietta, Tony, Izolina, Angelo, Octavio, Irma, and Luigia also welcomed her. She’s sorely missed by her children, Doris, Neva (Ledo), Renzo and daughter-in-law Norma. Her grandchildren Vanessa (Andrew), Angela (David) and Derek (Hillary) and great-grandchildren Violet, Alistair and Tilly are grateful for the time they got to spend with her.
Maria was a woman of courage, fortitude and intense pride. In 1955, she completed the journey to Sudbury, Ont. from Belfiore, Italy by sea and rail, alone with her small children. Maria raised her family, worked and lived the rest of her life here. In her own small way, she added to the wonderful fabric of this city and this country that she came to call home.
Maria was a master seamstress, gardener and chef. Her family cherishes memories of elaborate meals around her table. Even in her final weeks, she loved touring St. Joseph’s flower beds, stopping to lift and admire each bloom.
The family requests donations be made in her honour to St. Joseph’s Villa.
Private family services entrusted to the Jackson & Barnard Funeral Home.
