John Frederick Thurston went to be with his Lord on 28 September 2019.
John was born 8 January 1924 in Vonda, Saskatchewan to Edward (Ed) and Christina Thurston (Schreurs). John was 2nd of 10 siblings. He served overseas with the Canadian Armed Forces from 1942 to 1946 mainly as a dispatch rider on Harley Davidson motorbikes. He served in England, Holland and Germany. John returned home to a career in grain farming. To supplement his farming he worked for several winters underground in nickel mines in Sudbury with his brother Ted. He married Verna Elizabeth Wood of Vancouver BC in 1954, and lived in the town of Vonda. They had one son, Roy. John was active in the community of Vonda and was Mayor from 1977 to 1985 and on council until 1988. He retired from farming aged 83 years. John and Verna moved to Diamond House Warman in 2017.
John was predeceased by his parents Edward and Christina, sisters May and Margaret, brothers Robert (Bob), Pete and Ted, and his beloved wife Verna.
John is lovingly remembered by son Roy and daughter-in-law Sue of Fremantle, Western Australia, Thurston family members, nephews and nieces, friends from in and around Vonda and Patience Lake Church. The Celebration of Life will be held on November 7, 2019 at 1:00 pm at the Vonda Rink.
