Dr. Wallace Burton MacKeigan

With deep sorrow we announce the unexpected passing of Dr. Wallace Burton MacKeigan on Wednesday Oct. 16 2019.
Dr. Wallace MacKeigan “Wally”, was born in Sydney Mines on September 18 1933, the son of the late Purves and Mary Grace (Sharp) MacKeigan. He studied science (BSc) at Acadia University and Dalhousie University where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1959. Upon graduation he chose to return to his home town to practice dentistry, opening a solo dental practice on Main Street where he remained for 32 years until his retirement. He will be remembered as a calm and caring dental practitioner whose many patients still speak of his kind and gentle manner.
He married the love of his life, Anne Marie MacDonald of Millville N.S., in Dartmouth N.S. on December 21 1956. They started a family and enjoyed 62 years of marriage. The family often vacationed in P.E.I., Ingonish, and New England with their travel trailer, enjoying lots of swimming, hiking, bonfires, and outdoor life. Wally was also known as an avid golfer and had a hole in one at Alderdale Greens in 2012. His true passion was downhill skiing which took him from Newfoundland to B.C. and built many good friendships.
Dr. MacKeigan was a devout member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and served in many capacities including Chairman of the Board, Elder, and Moderator of the Presbytery of Cape Breton. His faith in God directed him to this calling.
In a volunteer capacity he served on the Cape Breton Chapter of the Nova Scotia Dental Association and was a committee member of the Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia.
Upon retirement Wally and Anne traveled over the years to USA, Europe, and the Caribbean.
He will be deeply missed by Anne, their children, grandchildren, and many friends and neighbours.
Dr. MacKeigan was predeceased by his parents; brothers Lloyd and Walter; sister Shirley (Lloyd MacDonald). He is survived by his wife Anne; children Katherine Leslie MacKeigan (George Goad), Walter Burton MacKeigan (Clare), Ian David MacKeigan (missing); granddaughters Charlotte Anne MacKeigan and Emily Anne MacKeigan; sisters Gladys (Allan Corby) and Connie (Murdock Morrison).
Visitation will take place Thursday, October 24, 2019, from 7 to 9 pm in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines. Funeral service, officiated by Rev. Dr. Marion Barclay MacKay, will be held Friday, October 25, at 2 pm in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Reception to follow.
