It is with great sadness that the family of Daniel
« Danny » Grant, loving husband of Linda (Simpson)
Grant, announces his passing on Monday, October 14, 2019 at
the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital after a short battle with cancer.
Born in Fredericton on February 21, 1946, he was the son of the late
Fred and Jean (Hossack) Grant.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter,
Kelly Grant (Marty Surette) of Fredericton, and her daughter, Jordan
Szmidt; son, Jeffrey Grant of New Westminster, BC; brothers, John,
Paul, Jerry (Carolyn Mackay), Tony (Brenda Sharpe) and sister, Barbara
Leachman (Steve); sisters-in-law, Elaine Bernard (late Spencer), Jean
Gass (Randford) and Carolyn Kehoe, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins
and many wonderful friends. n addition to his parents, Danny was
predeceased by infant sister, Patricia, and sister-in-law, Janice
(Mofford) Grant.
Danny spent thirteen years in the NHL playing for the
Montreal Canadians, the Minnesota North Stars, the Detroit Red Wings
and the Los Angeles Kings. He was awarded the Calder Trophy as Rookie
of the Year (1968-69) while playing with the Minnesota North Stars. He
scored 50 goals in the 1974-75 season with the Detroit Red Wings. He
earned the nickname Iron Man after playing 500 consecutive NHL games.
He was the only player to win the Hockey Night Show Down series twice.
Danny has been inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall Of Fame and
the Fredericton Wall of Fame.
Upon his retirement Danny and his family settled in
Fredericton. He became involved in coaching hockey at the senior,
major junior, midget and university levels. In 1981, he was
instrumental in bringing the Fredericton Express to town where he
served as President, player and Assistant Coach. In 2012, he was moved
to have the city name the new arena in honor of both he and Buster
Harvey, his friend and former teammate. He was the recipient of the
Paul Harris Award and Fredericton Chamber of Commerce Distinguished
Citizen Award.
Danny’s pleasures in life were simple: time spent
fishing on the Miramichi, getting wood ready for the winter, time with
friends and family; especially his granddaughter Jordan who brought
much joy to his life.
There will be no service at Danny’s request. A visitation
will be held at Kingswood Lodge on Thursday, October 17, 2019 from
3:00 – 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to New
Brunswick SPCA (NBSPCA) or the Timmy Munn Memorial Fund for
