Roderick Earle Ferguson
Sydney Mines
Roderick Earle Ferguson, age 68, left this world on Saturday, August 31, 2019, passing away peacefully at home, as he wished, surrounded by his loving family.
Roddy was the son of the late Thomas Roderick and Gladys (Reid) Ferguson.
He enjoyed his life of truck driving, starting at an early age, working alongside his grandfather, the late Bill Ferguson, with Modern city Dairy, eventually taking over the role of driver.
He attended Tractor Trailer Driving School in Debert, and started working with Eastern Transport. After its’ closure, he began working with Irving Oil, first as a broker, then as a tractor trailer driver. It was with Irving Oil he received his 30 year safe driving award.
He was a person who always wanted to learn, and his greatest accomplishment was when he received his High School Diploma with Highest Honours at age 56, after which he then went on to receive his Small Engine Repair, again with Highest Honours.
He enjoyed playing sports, playing baseball with the Northside Alpines, hockey with the Northside Vics, bowling, golfing, hunting and fishing. He was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Toronto Blue Jays.
Roddy is survived by his wife and best friend Gerladine, son Roddy Jr. (Jody), granddaughter Keslyn, his only sister Peggy (Jack) Ginter, brothers Gary, Donnie (Angie), and Brian (Yolanda), aunts Marion MacBurnie, Elaine (Gary) Smith, Margie Killam, Edna Hilton, uncle Gordie (Lexie) Reid, many nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and nephews, and his extended Carey family.
Besides his parents, Roddy was predeceased by a brother David Wayne in infancy, his first wife Freda MacIntosh, father and mother-in-law Leonard and Catherine Carey, brothers-in-law Michael and Brian Carey and Frank Young, several nieces and nephews, grandparents Bill and Margaret Ferguson, and Fred and Charlotte Reid.
Special thanks to Dr. Peter Poulos and Sarah, the doctors and nursing staff of palliative care, the VON, and Jobes Funeral Home for their compassion and professionalism.
Visitation for Roddy Ferguson will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2019, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. A memorial service will take place on Friday, at 10 am in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. A reception will follow in the parish hall. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
