Obituary for
Nancy Burns
BURNS, Nancy – Surrounded by family in her home, Nancy Jean Burns passed away on September 1st, after a courageous 13 year struggle with cancer. Born to Alexander Weir and Vera Weir (nee Brown). Nancy was 84 years old, born January 18th, 1935 in Belleville ON. She grew up in Niagara Falls and graduated from The Mack Center for Nursing Education in St. Catharines. She married the love of her life Wayne Franklin Burns of Niagara Falls in 1957 and they were married for 62 amazing years. A true romantic, Wayne gave Nancy a single red rose every Friday for their entire life together.
Nancy (and Wayne) raised 3 loving and supportive children in Burlington – Scott (Janet), Kent (Kathy) & Kelsey (Karl). She has 6 wonderful grandchildren who she was incredibly proud of – Devin (Chelsea), Kyle (Amy), Nathan, Kenzie, Madison, Hannah and her great-grandson Jacob. Nancy is survived by her sister Lynn Coach and brother Richard (Rowie) Weir.
Nancy was a volunteer her entire life, she served as President of the Hospital Auxiliary in Niagara-On -The-Lake, where she has lived the past 30 years, the Garden Club of Niagara, the Niagara Ladies Auxiliary St. Andrews and a member of Shaw Guild, and an Elder at St. Andrews Church. She was member of Master’s Synchro Swim Team for 12 years in Mississauga and was a Life Skills Coach at Sheridan College for 12 years.
Our mom was incredibly courageous, resilient and full of positivity. She loved nothing more than to be with her family and friends – or spending time in her beautiful gardens. She had a contagious laugh, warm heart and fun-loving spirit. She was incredibly competitive whether it came to a friendly game of dominos, scrabble or a ping pong match to see who does the dishes. Mom was an amazing example and inspiration to all of us. She will be deeply missed.
Our family is very grateful for the fine medical care that mom received from Dr. John Nolan and Oncologist Dr. Brian Leber at Juravinski Hospital, and the numerous dedicated and caring people at Saint Elizabeth Health Care, Niagara-On-The-Lake Palliative Care and the HNHB LHIN Care Team.
A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Niagara-On-The-Lake on Saturday, September 14th at 2:00 pm followed by a reception at the Church Hall.
In lieu of flowers please donate to WMFC (Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia Foundation of Canada) wmfc.ca/. Memories, photos and condolences may be shared at www.morganfuneral.com.
