Maisie Amelia Althea Braye (née Harbin)
September 7, 1945 (Rodgers Cove, NL)
September 12, 2019 (Edmonton, AB)
Maisie loved her God and her family. She was a devoted wife, a loving and tender-hearted mother, and a grandmother who cherished time with her grandchildren. Always giving and forgiving, she spent much of herself for the sake of others. She loved her church family, and as cancer ravaged her body, she deeply missed regularly attending worship services.
She grew up in the Gander Bay, NL area, married in Labrador City, NL (May 4, 1966), gave birth to three boys, then moved to Windsor, NL (~1975). After moving to Fort McMurray, Alberta (September 1978), Maisie’s love as a mother would soon compel her to the operating room; in November 1979, she selflessly donated a kidney to her oldest son. A stay-at-home mom during her sons’ growing up years–and always an industrious wife– she eventually re-entered the workplace as a cook. Her passion for the kitchen led her to work for the Greater Edmonton Foundation, and her service to the seniors’ community ended at Edmonton Grace Manor with her retirement. During her work years, she returned to school as a mature student, earning her Red Seal Journeyman Certificate in Culinary Arts from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (September 10, 1997). Her battle with cancer began in 2013, ending peacefully at St. Joseph’s Auxiliary Hospital, her husband of 53 years beside her. She died knowing that the best was yet to come, that among the many Christ-bought blessings and eternal pleasures she would enjoy in heaven is a new body, forever unblemished by incurable diseases, never again to succumb to horrible things like cancer. O death, where is thy sting! Yet, words fail to express how deeply many will miss her. She loved much and was much loved.
Maisie is survived by her loving husband, Don; her three sons, Todd (Bev), Darryl (Gerri), and Chris; her granddaughters, Brianne, Georgia, Allie, and Anna; and her siblings, Bill (Annie), Scott (Betty), David (Mickey), Edith (Barry), Edna (Carl), and Ronnie (Marion). She is predeceased by her parents Harold and Netta Harbin, sister Ethel Leyte, and sister-in-law Daisy.
The funeral service will be held at Meadowlands Baptist Church, 2215 17 Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta, Saturday, September 21, 11 A.M. Public viewing at 9:30 A.M. – 10:30 A.M.
