Cornelis (Kees) Vreugdenhil
1938-2019
Cornelis (Kees) Vreugdenhil March 14, 1938 … Sept 23, 2019
On Monday Sept 23, 2019, God called home his beloved child Cornelis
(Kees) Vreugdenhil, his 81 year journey ended. His wife Liz was at
his side at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, where he had been for two
weeks due his rapid decline after living with Parkinson Disease for
twenty years.
His passing is grieved by Liz, his wife of 58 years, and their
children, Nick and Yumiko, Helen, Andrew and Karen, and Corine and
Stephen; grandchildren Nick and Kirsten, Stephanie and Mario, Sarah
and Quentin, Eric, Max, Beth, Eden and Avery, and great-grandchildren
Dominic, Kacie and Ellie. He will also be missed by his surviving
siblings, Jim and Christine, and Lena, and by many nephews, nieces and
cousins, members of Liz’s family and friends in Canada, the
United States and the Netherlands. Kees was predeceased by his
parents, his sister Frances and his brother Nick.
Kees was born in Honselersdyk, The Netherlands, the second of five
children of Nicolaas and Cornelia. The family moved to Canada in 1951.
In 1956 Kees began to work for Union Gas. In 1961 he married Liz
Alkema and they settled in Chatham to raise their family and were part
of Grace Christian Reformed Church. His retirement at 60 was closely
followed by a diagnosis of Parkinson Disease, which he faced with the
same determination as he had other challenges in his life. In 2006
Kees and Liz moved to Cambridge where they settled into life in a new
community, joining Maranatha Christian Reformed Church.
Kees was involved in many kingdom causes. Chatham Christian Schools,
South Chatham Village, Redeemer University College, the Institute for
Christian Studies, the Christian Labour Association of Canada,
Citizens for Public Justice, the United Way and more were blessed by
his willingness to give of his time and his abilities. His faith was
always an example to those who knew him, and an inspiration to his
family.
At Kees’ request, cremation has taken place. As an expression
of sympathy, donations may be made in support of the Vreugdenhil
Family Bursary fund at Redeemer University College,
