Victor’s Obituary
McGUIRE, Victor Donald – It is with heavy hearts that the children of Victor Donald McGuire announce his passing on August 6, 2019 at Villa St Joseph-du-Lac in Yarmouth, NS. He was the son of the late Wilfred and Elizabeth (Theriault) McGuire. Dad spent most of his working life with the Yarmouth Fruit Company (Hudson’s Bay Company). He was a devout Catholic and his faith gave him strength throughout his life. He was an active member in the church and his community. He was a firefighter for 35 years, Scout leader and played a major role in the establishment of Scotia Sportsmen’s Association and the Yarmouth Sports Heritage Museum. (He wore down many of the local business owners in Yarmouth with his fundraising efforts!) Dad had many passions throughout his life. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and did both for as long as he physically was able. Afterwards, he satisfied his love of the outdoors with his love of art. Robert Bateman was his favourite artist. He appreciated music all his life and his taste in music varied from Meat Loaf to Andrea Bocelli and everything in between. When we introduced him to YouTube, he had his own private concerts at home! When he wasn’t listening to music, he read. The Kindle allowed him to keep reading until the end of his life. That large font was a life saver! He had a wicked sense of humor and that humor was present until his last days. He sometimes lacked a filter and that was a bit of a worry when he became deaf and started to “whisper” some remarks a little too loudly in public!! He was a husband to our mother, Dora, for 64 years. He fought the dementia battle alongside her for as long as he was able and missed her terribly after her death. He was a father to six children, and he was proud of us all. In a time when mothers took on most of the childcare, he was a hands-on dad. He changed diapers, gave baths, and put us all to bed most nights as Mom worked the night shift. He worked hard to provide for his family and, while we may not have had everything our friends had, we had everything we ever needed. What we did have in our home was an endless supply of love. He was the centre of all the family gatherings and now we have lost our anchor. We will miss him terribly but take comfort knowing that he is back in the arms of Mom. He leaves behind his daughters; Raelene (Greg) Fevens, Dawn McGuire, Kelly (Mark) Setlakwe (all of Yarmouth), Mary (Raymond) Meuse( Timberlea), and sons Alan McGuire (Yarmouth) and Erin (Catherine) McGuire (Halifax). He was Papa to Eliott, Angel, Victoria, Allison, Jenna, Danielle, Mitchell, Isaac, Jennifer and Jane and a great-grandfather to nine children. He is also survived by his brothers Roy and Mike as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Catherine and Una. The family would like to thank Kelly Smith and Gail Deveau for the love and care you gave to our father. You gave him the gift of staying in his home much longer than we could have hoped. We would also like to acknowledge and thank the wonderful staff at Villa St Joseph-du-Lac for the love and care given to Dad during his brief stay with you. We would particularly like to thank Roseann (with no “e”), Raymond, Melissa and Krystin who went above and beyond during the last hours of his life. You are truly in the right profession. Visitation will be held at Huskilson’s Funeral Home on Sunday, August 11th from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 12th at 10:30am at St Ambrose Co-Cathedral in Yarmouth, Deacon Bruce Hubbard officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of your choice. Condolences may be left on Huskilson’s Funeral Home online guestbook at www.huskilson.net
