Shirley Caroline Shaver passed away in Trillium Hospice on August 6th, 2019 with Al, her husband of 67 years, at her side.
Shirley was born April 29, 1927 to Mary and Vern Parker in Kenora. She came with them as a child to Medicine Hat where she was raised and married in 1952. Five wonderful children followed, all born in Edmonton where Al was pursuing his career. Moves to Montreal, Windsor, and Toronto followed swiftly with Shirley managing the moves and five active youngsters. In 1967 they moved to Minneapolis where Al spent almost 30 years as the “Voice of the Minnesota North Stars’. Shirley flourished in their lovely home which soon became a hub for gatherings of friends and colleagues as well as family holiday dinners. She was an accomplished cook and gracious host. As grandchildren followed, she became a devoted grandma welcoming sleepovers and birthday parties.
Together, they came to Qualicum in 1996 where they have thrived. Loving Vancouver Island, travelling, and getting back East for visits as well as enjoying the activities and friendships they made kept them happily involved.
Shirley is survived by Al, sons Wally (Connie), Jim (Cheryl), and Gary (Michaelyn) and daughters Judy (Dave) Molneau and Sue (Doug) Bergemann, nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one on the way; brothers Bob (Rita), Brian (Marg) and sister Joyce Parker.
A private family gathering will be held in the East. Locally the family will respect Shirley’s wish for simplicity and ask only that you remember her with love. The family expresses their most sincere thanks to the VIHA home nurses, home support and the staff at Trillium Hospice. You are all angels.
