It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a dear husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Mike passed at the Health Sciences Centre surrounded by his family’s love and care after a brief battle with cancer. Mike is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Audrey Buist. Leaving to mourn his devoted wife Pat; son Jason (Melanie); daughter Kelly; and grandchildren: Ryan, Ethan and Grace. Leaving also his siblings: Richard (Janet), Barb (Jim), Larry (Mirella) and Lorraine (Tony); and a large circle of extended family and friends.
Special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of Eastern Health who cared for him with compassion.
Mike started and ended his lustrous career with his passion: baseball. After signing a pro ball contract in 1963, at the age of 16, Mike went on to wear many hats throughout his life. He taught at Cathedral High School in Hamilton, he was a statistician for the Toronto Blue Jays, a marketing promoter for Labatts, founder of Destination St. John’s, Assistant Deputy Minister of tourism and most recently, Executive Director for St. John’s Minor Baseball. These are just to name a few. He would be the first to tell you however that his most cherished role was that of a father, husband, grandfather and loyal friend. He was an avid bridge player as well, earning himself his silver life master certificate from the American Contract Bridge League. His smile was contagious, his heart was full and his generosity was endless. He will never be forgotten.
Mike will be resting at Caul’s Funeral Home on LeMarchant Road on Wednesday, August 28th from 11:00am to 9:00pm. A mass will be held on Thursday, August 29th at 9:30am at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist. In true Mike Buist fashion, feel free to wear your favourite baseball shirt or jersey. There will be a celebration of life immediately following the mass at the St. John’s Elks Club on Carpasian Rd.
“It’s the bottom of the ninth, you have pitched your perfect game. You’re fatigued and it is now time to rest eternally & peacefully”
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Michael Buist..
