Piper, Mellicent Elaine “Lani”
December 13, 1940 – August 6, 2019
In the early hours of Tuesday, August 6, 2019, after putting up a courageous fight, our mother Lani left her earthly life to begin a new journey, and was welcomed into the loving arms of her beloved daughter, Melanie Sue Hart, and her beloved fur baby, Monster. She was born in Lewiston, NY and was raised in Niagara Falls, NY where she attended local schools graduating from the old Niagara Falls High School in 1958. In 1975 she moved to Canada where she has resided for the last 40+ years. Mom was raised around horses and loved skiing, camping, & spending time outdoors. She made the best homemade Easter candy and her orange cranberry sauce at Christmas was a family tradition. She was an accomplished artist, woodcarver, knitter and created the most beautiful needlepoint tapestries. She was well known in the figure skating world in Niagara Falls, Ontario as an adult skater. She volunteered in many capacities in several clubs with the young skaters, was a board member, and sat on area council. She retired from Star Collision after many dedicated years of service.
She is survived by her Son John R. Hart & wife Christina, her granddaughter Jamie Hart & great grandchildren Amaya & Nyla, her grandson Justin Hart, wife Stephanie & great grandson Jaxson. Son Don R. Hart, Jr., her granddaughter Christine “Niki” Hart, husband Nick & great grandchildren Hailey & Knox, her daughter-in-law Laurie Shanabarger along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her daughter Melanie Sue Hart, she was predeceased by her parents, John & Mellicent (MacVittie) Piper and her sister Judith Stoneham. Mom was a very unique individual who will be dearly missed by all whose life she touched and fondly remembered by her closest of friends Nancy Jo, Ian and Janis, Candi and Brent, and of course her loving fur babies who she cherished, Sam and Charlie.
At Elaine’s request, there will be no prior visitation. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Lockport, NY (USA). A celebration of Elaine’s life will take place at a later date in Canada. Flowers are gratefully declined, but donations on her behalf can be made to the Niagara Falls Humane Society or a charity of one’s choice. Elaine’s final arrangements have been entrusted to Morse & Son Funeral Home, Niagara Falls, Ontario.
