HAMILTON, Clarence James (Jim), age 99, passed away peacefully at Stratford General Hospital on August 10, 2019, born in Lowestoff, England, son of the late Gertrude Anna and James Hamilton. Jim and his family immigrated to Windsor where his baseball career began. His family moved to Matheson, Ontario to farm government land and Jim worked in the McIntyre Gold Mine before he volunteered for the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was stationed in Gander, Newfoundland for 18 months flying Canso aircraft on bomber reconnaissance. He was also stationed in Torquay and Warrington, England. After the war, he married his wife of 73 years, Jean, and they settled in Iroquois Falls where Jim worked as a rate analyst for Abitibi Paper Company. A job transfer took them to Toronto for 15 years and then on to Stratford purchasing the Traveller’s Motel. Jim and Jean spent many years in Stratford, Bayfield, Florida and Victoria. Jim loved sports, playing one professional baseball game for the Detroit Tigers. He loved tennis, curling, soccer, skiing, hockey and football. One of his greatest passions however was music, having been a professional musician for 75 years and playing trombone since his early teens. He played for many musical groups including Bob Hope, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, the Stratford Festival, the Stratford Concert Band and most recently the Goderich Laketown Band. Jim is survived by his wife Jean, children Linda Edwards of Stratford, Gary Hamilton (Sue) of Edmonton, and Julie Hamilton (Stan Sebben) of Stratford; granddaughter Lindsay Murray (Mark) of Baden and great-grandchildren Austin Dale, Mark and Olivia Murray. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the incredible staff at Greenwood Court and the Stratford Hospital for their wonderful care and compassion. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at Greenwood Court, 90 Greenwood Drive, Stratford, on Thursday, August 15, 2019 at 11 a.m. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Music Department at Greenwood Court or the Goderich Laketown Band through the W.G. Young Funeral Home, Stratford. 519.271.7411
