Georgina Patricia Strate (nee Nicholson)
October 12, 1928 – July 19, 2019
Georgina Patricia Strate (nee Nicholson) passed away peacefully on July 19, 2019 at the age of 90. Georgie was born on October 12, 1928 in Edmonton, Alberta.
She is survived by her loving children, Doug (Monique), Karen (Ron), Mark (Heather), Bob (Sandy), 12 Grandchildren, and 7 Great-Grandchildren and predeceased by her parents, Nick and Tilly Nicholson; her siblings, Connie, Helen and George; and her grandchildren, Trent, Brandon, Cody and Nick.
Born from immigrant parents, her father
from Greece, and her mother from Austria who came by boat as a young child all
by herself with her name pinned to her jacket. Tilly and Nick met in Edmonton,
where Georgie grew up with her three siblings and became a secretary after high
school.
Georgie met her husband, Kay Strate, at a
public skating rink. Georgie had tripped and fallen on the ice when Kay swooped
in and lifted her to her feet. On May 27th, 1950 they married in
Edmonton.
In about 1957, they bought the Civic Tire
shop and moved to Lloydminster, Alberta. Mom and Dad provided their children
with the most wonderful childhood. We were a close-knit family who enjoyed many
vacations together, but our most cherished memories are from our cabin at Sandy
Beach where we spent most of the summers swimming (Mom, we didn’t really like
the cold swimming lessons, but we now do appreciate you making us go), boating,
campfires, and entertaining friends. The family moved to Kamloops in December
of 1971.
Georgie was an extraordinary cook, hostess, seamstress, quilter, knitter, and interior decorator. She served in numerous callings over the years as an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her superb hand dipped homemade chocolates were of professional quality. Some of her interests included bridge, crossword puzzles, curling, swimming, golfing, and she was a voracious reader. She was a sun worshiper who couldn’t get enough of an ocean beach. She was a loyal friend to many.
Due to the debilitating degree of her
Alzheimer’s for the past decade, Georgie was unable to have a relationship with
her great grandchildren. She would have embraced each one with the same fierce
love and devotion that she displayed towards her children and grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at
Overland Care Facility. We are humbled and grateful beyond words for the daily
tenderness and compassion that we witnessed during the last ten years.
A truly extraordinary person and a life well lived. You are missed every day.
A family service/celebration of life will be held near Georgie’s birthday in October.
