With almost a century full of treasured memories, we announce the passing of Ethel Hawley, wife of the late Percy Hawley, resident of Edson (formerly of Stony Plain, Spruce Grove, Vermilion and Mannville, Alberta), at the age of 97 years.
Ethel was born in Mannville to Cleland and Ruby Swain. She married Percy, a young Mannville farmer, in July 1940. They began farming and ranching northeast of Mannville until they sold the farm in 1961, moving to Vermilion and later Spruce Grove. During these years they enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling and grandchildren. Ethel loved crafts such as knitting, crocheting dish cloths, making hangers, cooking and above all her Bingo. A couple of years after Percy’s passing, she moved to a senior’s condominium in Stony Plain and then finally to Edson. Ethel was a true inspiration to her family, always setting high standards and providing guidance and encouragement. She was a gracious, kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
She will be forever missed by her daughters, Ruby (Wayne) Ennis and Lillian (John) Steffensen; son, Howard (Delores) Hawley; grandchildren, Janeen (Todd) Patchell, Greg (Derek) Steffensen, Serena (Tim) Steffensen, Megan Hawley, Bryan Hawley; two great-grandchildren, Abigail and Claire; sister, Dorothy (Dimp) Johnson; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Percy in 1991; son-in-law Ken Cucheran; sisters, Myrtle Davis, Rosetta Arnold, Lucille Hughes, Nellie Whitson and Neva Batt; as well as brothers, Harold, Clarence, and Cleland Swain.
A Memorial Service will be held at Connelly- McKinley Funeral Home, 10011-114 Street, Edmonton, Alberta, on Monday, September 9, 2019 at 1:00 p.m.
