HAMZA, Sophia Marie – March 14, 2008-August 23, 2019
We are heartbroken to share that our beautiful daughter Sophie Hamza passed away in her sleep on the morning of Friday, August 23, 2019. In her impactful 11 1/2 years, she made us remember to live every day in the moment.
Her incredible spirit was loved by everyone who knew her, but she will especially be missed by her dad Tom, mom Sarah and big sister Grace. Her legacy on this earth was out of proportion to her short time with us.
Born in Toronto but moved to Stratford at the age of four, her childhood was impacted by Sanfilippo Syndrome, a genetic disorder that slowly extinguished her light. This did not stop her from living vibrantly, supported by her family, neighbours, loving caregivers and the terrific staff at Romeo Public School. Despite her physical and mental limitations, she lived in a community that integrated her wherever it could. Our town seemed to sing “Hi Sophie” wherever she went!
Sophie’s symbol was a bumble bee. Those that supported her in the school, out in the community and through the medical system worked tirelessly to keep her hive going. Her inspiration built playgrounds, funded research, and designed structures and programs with inclusivity for everyone in mind. She inspired change and made us work harder – like any Queen Bee would do.
We hate to say goodbye, but take comfort that she is now free. Released from the constraints of her condition we know she is now running with joy and talking up a storm, having rediscovered her strong legs and beautiful voice.
A celebration of her life will be held at the band shell at Upper Queen’s Park at 11 a.m. on Thursday August 29, followed by a reception in the Stratford Festival Marquee. All are welcome to join her remembrance in their white and yellow bumble-bee best – no head-to-toe black for our sweet girl. Though, if you happen to have a bee antennae at the ready, by all means wear with pride.
