Maria Bazzul, nee Golob, peacefully passed away surrounded by family at St. Joseph’s Villa on August 23, 2019. Cherished wife of Aleš Bazzul (predeceased 2001). Loving mother of Radovan (Carmen), Mira, Felice (Patricia), and Irma (Doug). Dearest « Nona » to Andrei (Jodi), Jesse (Kate), Simone (Dean), Charlene (Roger), Casimir, Samantha, Lucas (Stephanie), Chiara and Felicia and great grandchildren, Luca, Joseph, Alex, Charlie, Emilia, Rose, Truman and Nico. Predeceased by her parents Ivan and Josipa Golob; dear sister to Stanko (Daniela predeceased), Joseph (Mary), Ana (Tony predeceased) and Milka (Miro) and Nina (Egidio) all predeceased.
Maria was born on October 12, 1927 in Pazin, Istria (now part of Croatia). Her life alongside our father’s spanned over decades of hardship and challenges dictated by war and the grim aftermath fallen upon those dispossessed of country, belongings and human value. Our mother was the great protector of the family while refugees of war in Laterina (Arezzo, Italy), later residents in Bergamo (Italy) and ultimately immigrants in Canada. Always the cheerful and tireless hard worker, our mother’s house was a hearth of the art of living and a sanctuary of cozy comfort. Throughout the years working as a cleaner with the Sudbury Board of Education and later in retirement, her home was a harbour of activities such as sewing, embroidering and knitting, gardening, winemaking and passionate authentic cooking. There was always a project in the making that had to satisfy her high standard of accomplishment. She led by example and always supported and encouraged us in our life’s pursuits. Although not having had the opportunity of higher education, our mother was a lover of art and music of all types. In her instinctive way she had a keen intellect and was always the attentive listener. She was Nona to all her grandchildren equally, an open door to all their queries and conversations. She was the language of all intangible gifts; her grandchildren always felt graced by her love, warmth and incredible generosity. She will be dearly remembered by all her family and friends leaving a great imprint in us all.
