David John Wilson

David John Wilson
1940-2019
David J Wilson, of Fredericton, NB, passed peacefully at home
on August 22, 2019, surrounded by the love of « his three
girls. » He was born in Fredericton on December 27, 1940. He
attended the University of New Brunswick where he met the love of his
life, Elizabeth (Liz) Paterson and they married in
1963.
David graduated in Civil Engineering (1963) at UNB followed
by an MBA (1965) at Western University. In 1970 David became President
and principal shareholder of Wilson Insurance, succeeding his father,
W. Hedley Wilson, who started the business in 1930. In 2011, David
handed over the reins to his daughter Heather, and together with their
team, they continued to build the business. He was still actively
involved, opening the office by 6:30 am each workday right up until
last Thursday.
Through David’s extensive community involvement,
his efforts helped make Fredericton and area a better place to work,
live and play. He volunteered in excess of 300 hours annually for
various causes and held significant community roles serving as board
member and Chairman of Chalmers Regional Hospital Foundation,
Miramichi Salmon Association (MSA), YMCA of Fredericton, Christ Church
Cathedral, the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, and
United Way.
Additionally, he served on many fundraising committees; The
Chalmers CT Scan, « Your New Y » Capital Campaign, the
Cathedral Restoration, The United Way Annual Campaign, Small Craft
Aquatic Center, and the Fredericton Community Pool. David led the
Chalmers Foundation « Your Health – Your Heart »
fundraising campaign that raised $1.2 million to create a new cardiac
diagnostic program for the River Valley Health Region. David stepped
down as Chair in 2013 yet continued to act as a trusted advisor for
the Chalmers Board of Directors and Staff.
Through David’s leadership, the Miramichi Salmon
Association experienced significant sustainable growth in both
revenues and conservation program delivery. He served as Past Board
Chair, Chair of the Nominating Committee and as a member of the MSA
Board Executive. David will be honoured posthumously at the Miramichi
Salmon Association’s Annual Conservation Dinner on October 3
for his exemplary service and contributions to salmon
conservation.
David served his community as a City Councillor and received
many awards including the Downtown Fredericton Inc. Mazzuca Award, the
Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizen Award (1990), the
Rotary’s Distinguished Paul Harris Fellow (2007) and the
Fredericton Community Foundation’s Philanthropy in Action
Award (2017).
David was deeply devoted to his wife, Liz; daughters, Jodie
Wilson (Terry Dawydiak) and Heather Wilson (Greg Violette) and adored
his grandchildren, Wilson, Caeden and Kira, who kept him young at
heart. They all grieve the loss of their husband, dad, father-in-law
and « gampy. » Also mourning his loss are sister, Elizabeth
Tuters (Kas) and nephew, Marc, and many other close relatives, dear
friends, clients, business colleagues and his Wilson Insurance
family.
The funeral service will be held from Christ Church
Cathedral, 803 Brunswick Street, on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at 3 pm.
A less formal Celebration of Life is being planned for early October
for close family and friends to share their memories of
David.
Donations in remembrance of David can be made to the Chalmers
Regional Hospital Foundation, the Miramichi Salmon Association or a
charity of your choice.
