BOBACK, Victor
Victor “Vic” Douglas Boback, aged 81 years, of Saskatoon passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2019 after battling an aggressive cancer. Vic was born in North Battleford to Peter and Mary Boback on May 24, 1938 and was the youngest of five siblings, after Allan (Maureen), Larry (Marie), Shirley (Glen) and Evelyn. Vic spent the majority of his adult life in Prince Albert, where he met and married Betty Zaparaniuk and where they raised their two daughters, Brynn and Karen. Dad was a carpenter by trade, and spent much of his time and talent in his labours of love. He had a hand in the building of many of the beautiful hiking and back country trails throughout PANP, and Waskesiu became his second home and favourite place in the summers. With three generations around the kitchen table, a fierce game of “rummy” would often take place after the end of a day’s work. Vic’s real passion was sports, both as a player and a fan. Dad was always athletic, and was still a regular at the gym until the cancer took over. He loved competitions and had great success in tennis, fastball, golf and hockey, the “Burns Kings”, being inducted into the P.A. Sports Hall of Fame. It was golf however, that became his great love, where he participated in many golf tournaments, including the Willingdon Cup, a Canadian Amateur Golf Tournament donated by the Governor General of Canada to be awarded to the best inter-provincial men’s team. He was also an avid Montreal Canadiens fan and cheered for his “Riders” whenever they played. Dad was an artist and a creator of many beautiful things, from refinishing antiques to their original beauty or creating extraordinary stained glass windows that were placed within our homes. His wood working and finishing skills brought a quality of workmanship that we will still cherish today. Vic was always proud of his daughters, Brynn (Mark Lane) and Karen for their work in helping others. He was overjoyed to see his granddaughters; Tess and Ella (Lane) grow into beautiful young ladies, and cherished his time with them. He will be remembered fondly by his many nieces, nephews, cousins and his friends; especially those closest to him. He loved to play practical jokes and had a great sense of humour that will keep us smiling forever. He enjoyed many family dinners and celebrations together; Ukrainian style, where music was played, food was plentiful and voices were loud, and after which you could always be sure to find Dad quietly cleaning up behind the rest of us. His love for the outdoors, sports and working with his hands will never be forgotten, and his quiet way of showing how much he cared was evident to those who truly knew him. We miss him dearly. Special thanks to the medical care teams at RUH 6100 and St. Paul’s Hospital – Palliative Care, who showed him great compassion; and to his Prairie Hospice “angel” Mavis for her assistance and care over the past few months. Dad’s wishes were for a simple gathering of his family and friends at a later date.
