Valery Joseph « Val » Legere
1929-2019
It is with great sadness that we
announce the death of Valery Joseph
Legere, 90, of Sackville, NB, at the Drew Nursing Home
on Friday, May 31, 2019. Born in Sackville, NB, Val was a
son of the late Levi and Helena (Bourque) Legere.
Throughout his entire life, Val was
deeply devoted to his faith. He was an active member of St.
Vincent’s Roman Catholic Church, Sackville, and was responsible for
the refurbishing of the church in 1979 and served as chairman of the
parish council.
Born and raised in Sackville, NB, Val
graduated from Sackville High in 1946, and continued on to graduate
from St. Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Science in
1951. He then served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 28
years, retiring as Lieutenant Colonel. His military career
took him throughout North America, with a posting to England and a
year of service as an Army Liaison Officer to the UN in Vietnam.
His passions included furniture making,
singing, travel, and golf, as well as the family cottage at Amherst
Shore.
Val was very active in the community,
serving as chairman of school boards for Champlain College, Quebec,
and Sackville, NB as well as a Director of the Red Cross and a member
of the Sackville Rotary.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of
sixty-six years, Aline (nee Renault), Sackville, five sons, Guy
(Helene Paradis), Vancouver, Paul (Diane Connolly), Acton, ON, Jacques
(Valerie), Fort Myers, Florida, Philippe (Natasha), Kemptville, ON,
and Eric (Tan Thipsombat), Hong Kong; three daughters, Marie
Taniwa, Ottawa, Diane (Don Clavet) Legere, Amherst Shore, and Louise
(David) Leslie, Ottawa; twenty-two grandchildren and twelve
great grandchildren, as well as a sister, Margaret O’Connor,
Dieppe, two brothers, Robert, Lakeville, NB and Levi Jr.
(Leah), Chilliwack, BC and several nieces and
nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased
by a son Marc; three brothers, George, Arthur and Marc, and a sister,
Rita Milner.
Arrangements are under the care and
supervision of Jones Funeral Home, 70
Bridge Street, Sackville (506-364-1300) from where visitation will be
held on Wednesday, June 5, 2019, from 7-9 pm. A funeral
service will take place at St. Vincent’s Roman Catholic Church,
Sackville on Thursday at 2 pm, burial to follow in the Sackville
Cemetery. Father Allison Carroll presiding.
Donations in memory of Val may be made
to the Canadian Cancer Society.
