Johnson, Ruth Elinor
August 1, 1923 – June 4, 2019
Devoted and beloved mother of Fran (Dave Dickinson), Jane (Robert Mertens), Geoff (Kim
Mozil), adored grandmother to Hannah, and much-loved mother-in-law to Moira, Ruth died at
age 95 after a short illness surrounded by family. Predeceased by her husband Albert (Al) and
son Andrew (Andy). She maintained a loving interest in her extended family, following their
lives and careers with enthusiasm. A remarkable woman, family and music were the centres of
Ruth’s life. A pianist herself (B.Musc., University of British Columbia 1946), she played in a
quintet with dear friends until a week before she died. She was an original supporter of
Ottawa’s Chamberfest, often attending two or three concerts a day with friends and was a long-
time subscriber to the NAC’s Music for a Sunday Afternoon and orchestra series. Ruth alsoloved
following the paths of young musicians, watching them grow musicallyand enjoying their
achievements. She was a generous and warm friend to the many who knew her and through
phone calls, email, and Facebook was able to keep up with their lives. One of Ruth’s great
delights was CBC Radio – the announcers became her radio friends. She listened avidly to CBC
Radio 1 and 2 and Radio-Canada and loved making new musical discoveries. A passionate
reader, Ruth was a librarian(Simmons University), working as a reference librarian in the
Ottawa Public Library for many years. With husband Al, Ruth travelled to visit her children in
Canada, Europe and the US and travelled to Asia, South Africa and Europe, collecting memories
and friends. Throughout her long and wonderful life Ruth felt ‘lucky’ – in her family, in her
friends, and in her passions. She will be missed by everyone who knew her. Family and friends
are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at
O’Connor) on Friday, June 14 from 2pm until time of Service in the Chapel at 3pm. Reception
