Nina Sybella Mae MacDonnell
October 18, 1921 – June 05, 2019
Passed away peacefully at her home with family by her side, on June 5th, 2019. A longtime resident of South Uniacke, NS, Nina was the widow of the late John Charles (Jack) MacDonnell. Born in Halifax on October 18th, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Robert Boyd Maxwell and Matilda Jane (Mason) Maxwell of Upper Sackville. A faithful long time member of Uniacke Baptist Church, Nina served as Missionary Co-ordinator. She was also a Life Member of Uniacke and District Royal Canadian Legion, Br.165, a Life Member of Uniacke Seniors Jolly Jumpers Club, and was a Charter Member of the Uniacke Heritage Society.
Nina was a matriarch in the community and a surrogate grandmother to so many. Her spirit, wit, and laughter were contagious, and she was loved and adored by not just her family, but by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. Nina thoroughly enjoyed social gatherings, such as playing cards, Bible study, and lawn bowling. In her last months, Nina enjoyed visits from friends and family, and countless quiet and peaceful hours being cared for by Linda MacDonnell, whom she considered the daughter she never had.
Nina will be missed but lovingly remembered by her sons, Bob (Judy) of Brisbane, Australia, Mort (Diana), of Courtenay, B.C., Murray (Jo Anne) of Williamstown, Ontario, and Ian of Mahone Bay, NS.
She is survived by eight grandchildren, David, Bruce (Heather), Sharon (Evan Gough), Paul (Tina), Krista (Eric Ottaway), Kimberley (Stuart Hawker), Trevor (Anna), and Dawn Clark.
Grammie Mac will also be missed by her thirteen great-grandchildren and her daughters-in-law, Dorothy and Linda. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Dianne Maxwell and several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her grandson, Scott MacDonnell, brothers Jim and Mort Maxwell, one brother in infancy, and her sister Freda (late Everett) Lively.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of T.K. Barnard Funeral Home, Sackville Crossroads, Lower Sackville, NS, where visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 on Wednesday June 12th. A celebration of Nina’s life will be held at Uniacke Baptist Church, 200 Etter Road, Mount Uniacke, on June 13th at 2 pm, with Rev. David Cumby officiating. A reception in the Church basement will follow. Family flowers only but donations in her memory would be appreciated to Uniacke Baptist Church, Samaritan’s Purse, Christian Blind Mission, or a charity of your choice.
