Nancy Service, longtime resident of Penticton, passed away on her 80th birthday, Saturday, June 8th, 2019, surrounded by her family.
Nancy Marie Hafsos was born in Yakima, Washington on June 8, 1939, the first child of Russell K. Hafsos and Helen F. (Davis) Hafsos. She was raised and educated in Yakima. After graduating high school, Nancy attended Mountain View Bible College in Didsbury, Alberta, where she met her first husband Lorren DeWitt. They were married in Edmonton, Alberta in 1959 and were blessed with four children: Debbie, Terry, Sandra and Randy. In 1969 she married Jim Service and they relocated to the warmer climate of Penticton, B.C., where they resided for the rest of their lives.
Nancy was a skilled secretary and bookkeeper, and truly enjoyed her role as Office Manager at the Penticton Golf & Country Club. Nancy established lifelong friendships there with her “golf buddies” and her dear friends Sherry Badger and Debbi Mustard. She retired in 2004 after 35 years of service, and thoroughly enjoyed 15 years of retirement. She kept busy and entertained by her love of sports, (especially her love/hate relationship with football), music, knitting, making butter tarts, and exchanging jokes via email with friends, especially Roy and Barry. She loved a good joke and became known for that loud and infectious laugh of hers!
Nancy was generous and thoughtful, donating hundreds of knitted lap afghans to the residents of Haven Hill Retirement Center over the years, and volunteering as secretary for Habitat for Humanity for many years. In February of 2019, she moved into The Hamlets of Penticton, where she was very happy. Her love of life and family and her fun-seeking spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
Nancy is survived by her three daughters, Sandra (Kjeld) Rasmussen of Waldheim, Saskatchewan, Terry (Kevin) Cluett of Penticton, and Debbie (Tony) Stellrecht of West Falls, NY. She adored her grandchildren Allison, Natasha, Douglas, Michael, Jordan, Stefanie, Alyxandra, Rory, Brittanie, and Dustin and great-grandchildren Landyn, Brooklyn, McKenzie, Liam, Emma, Jacob, Lincoln, and Madelyn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jim, son Randy DeWitt, brothers Ron and Jerry Hafsos, and her beloved cat, Honey. She will be greatly missed as the “Big Sis” of Diane, Janet, Karen, Doug and Mel.
The family is especially grateful to The Hamlets Assisted Living staff, the staff at Penticton Regional Hospital, and her many friends for your affectionate care of our Mom.
A Funeral service will be held at Providence Funeral Chapel, 1258 Main St., Penticton, on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Concluding services and burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation to Habitat for Humanity or the Penticton SPCA.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Nancy Marie Service June 8 1939 June 8 2019 (age 80)..
