McDonald, Austin Dwight
June 26th, 2019
We sadly announce the peaceful passing of Austin “Mac” Dwight McDonald, at Henley Place, London, on Wednesday, June 26, 2019, in his 99th year. Predeceased by his loving wife of 67 years, Winnifred (née Bannister) (2009). Survived by his only daughter, Irene E. Pollock (Peter) of Thamesford; his granddaughters: Susan Gabriele (Jim Templeton) of Burlington and Catherine Mallick (Marty) of Seattle, Washington. He was “Grandpa-Great” to six great-grandchildren: Mason, James, Evan, Emmy, Samuel and Julia. Austin is also survived by his brother Bud McDonald (Gina) of Walsingham; his half sister Joyce; and many nieces and nephews in the Mcdonald and Bannister families. Austin was the oldest child of Russell and Irene (née Rush) McDonald of South Walsingham, in Norfolk County. Predeceased by brother Allan, and sisters: Kathleen Bueno, Myrtle Sniveley, and Winona Dorr. After leaving farming in East Williams Township, Austin became a Master Plumber in London, and retired as a Plumbing Inspector for the City of London. In their retirement, Austin and Winnie spent their winters in the Lakeland, Florida area, becoming very proficient at shuffleboard. They won many tournaments and were installed in three different Halls of Fame in Florida and Canada. As members of the Canadian International Shuffleboard Team, they competed in tournaments all over North America and Japan. He leaves quite a legacy of accomplishments in the sport of shuffleboard. Austin was an active, quiet man who also loved boating, fishing, going for long walks and gardening. Having lived such a long, interesting life, he could always be counted on to offer an opinion on many topics and became very knowledgeable about life in general, and gardening in particular. His flower and vegetable gardens were legendary. He had a very generous nature and was always happy to help his family. We would like to thank the caring staff at Horizon Place and Henley Place for their loving care of Austin in his final years. A funeral service will be conducted at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 1:30 p.m., with visitation one hour prior. Interment at Nairn Cemetery, in Nairn, Ontario. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Austin are asked to consider the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
