LACOMPTE, Mary Margaret (Murray)
Mary Margaret LaCompte (Murray) age 88, of Ottawa, Ontario passed away Sunday June 16, 2019. Mary Margaret was born in Ottawa on June 23, 1930 to Dr. Joseph M. Murray and Priscilla G. Murray (Poulin). She was a graduate of Ottawa Ladies College (1948), and received her Bachelor of Science from St. Pat’s College in 1952. At St. Pat’s she was the captain, and star, of the varsity swimming team and captain of the women’s basketball team. Mary Margaret was married to Eugene LaCompte on October 2, 1954; they were married 29 years. In 2010 she remarried to Dr. Gordon (Laurie) Liberty and was very warmly welcomed into the Liberty family by Laurie’s 3 children, their spouses and families. In recognition of their love for Mary Margaret, the Liberty family intends to hold a memorial service in July in Ottawa. Mary Margaret worked at the National Research Council of Canada for 2 years prior to her first marriage and then spent the next 16 years as a full-time mother raising 4 children. In 1970 while living in Montreal she returned to full-time paid employment. In 1974, she joined the federal public service in Ottawa and found her true vocation as a manpower councilor at Manpower and Immigration until her retirement in 1993. All her life Mary Margaret enjoyed outdoor activities such as swimming, skiing, hiking, riding her beloved horse Judy G in her teens, and in recent years became an avid golfer. She loved to go out for a good long walk every day and it was no surprise to family when she took 6 weeks to hike the El Camino in Spain at the age of 75. Mary Margaret also loved playing weekly bridge with her wide circle of friends. Mary Margaret was an avid world traveler in retirement and on her last day of work in 1993 she left Canada to backpack through the Middle East and Europe for the next 11 months. She loved to visit her children when they lived overseas and had memorable experiences visiting them in Japan, Israel, Germany, Belgium, and Romania. She also enjoyed wonderful trips with her husband Laurie including a honeymoon adventure to Egypt and Jordan (along with 9 close friends), as well as cruises to the Galapagos Islands, the Norwegian fjords, Fiji and other exotic locations. In the last few years they confined their travel to various destinations across Canada meeting family and friends. Mary Margaret is survived by 3 of her children: Pierre (Theresa), Marie, Matthew (Helen) and 8 grandchildren (Renee, Allie, Lauren, Nicholas, Andrea, Thomas, Heather and Matthew) plus 2 great-grandchildren (Charlotte and Rory). She is also survived by her spouse Laurie Liberty, as well as her sister Priscilla Gladu of Ottawa. Mary Margaret will be greatly missed by 13 nieces and nephews living in Canada and the United States, as well as other family and friends. Mary Margaret is predeceased by her parents, three older siblings (William Murray, Robert Murray and Adele Murray) as well as her very much loved youngest daughter Danielle Wilson (Steve). Visitation will be held between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm on June 23 at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor) in Ottawa. The funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday June 24 at St. Joseph’s Church at 174 Wilbrod Street in Ottawa. Father Richard Baudette, OMI, pastor at St. Joseph’s will be officiating.
