Kathleen June Boynton 19292019

Kathleen June Boynton
1929-2019
Fireworks and a band (somewhere) playing Hail to the Chief
welcomed Kay into the world on July 4, 1929. Over the course
of her 90 years, not much changed. Kay was a force of
nature.
Predeceased by her mother. Rena Tatton, her husband Ronald
and her son Van she leaves behind Her daughter Eloise Lloyd and her
son Kevin (Rhonda) Boynton as well as her beloved grand children
– Kevin Jr. (Kathy Frost), Nicholas (Amie) Boynton, Maxwell
(Ashley Bedford) and Kayla Boynton and her great grand children Emma
Boynton, Hailey Boynton, Tahlia Boynton, Sophia Boynton and Brady
Boynton.
During her life Kay worked in the fish and grocery
businesses. She worked tirelessly in the herring business of
her father-in-law and when that didn’t keep her busy enough
she bought similar businesses in Seal Cove; then decided buying ground
fish was a good idea, so she branched out. She was well
respected by both the workers and the fishermen, she worked along side
them, just as hard as they did and they appreciated that.
Kay was also instrumental in bringing sea egg harvesting to Grand
Manan and setting up the plant that was to become
Nickerson’s in Ingalls Head.
Grocery stores followed – two of them –
first the old Munroe store in Woodward’s Cove and then
Wason’s store in Castalia. And for good measure
– there was an apartment building that went with the
Woodward’s Cove store.
Eventually Kay moved on from traditional business and began a
painting group that later opened a gallery in her mother’s
house and became known as the Group of 8. Kay was a very
talented painter and her gallery opening sparked a seed and others
began what is now the Grand Manan Art Gallery. Sundays would
find Kay playing the piano for services at the Castalia Baptist
Church. It gave her such joy and that love of music followed
her to the Grand Manan Nursing Home where she continued to sing right
up until the last week of her life.
She and her love, talent and work ethic will be missed by
everyone that she touched; particularly the « kds ».
She was a light in their world.
At Kay’s request, there will be no visitation.
A celibration of Kay’s life will be on
Thursday, July 4, 2019 at 1:00PM, from the Castalia Baptist
Church. She will rest in Maple Grove
Cemetery, with her much loved husband Ronald and her son
Van.

The following poem is « so mum ».
This Is What Was Bequeathed Us written by Gregory
Orr
« This is what was bequeathed us;
This earth the beloved left
And, loving,
Left us.
No other world
But this one;
Willows and the river
And the factory
With its black smokestack.
No other shore, only this bank
On which the loving gather.
No meaning but what we find here
No purpose but what we make
That and the beloved’s clear
instructions:
Turn me into song; sing me awake. »
