Cicely’s Obituary
Rogers, Cicely M. – passed away peacefully in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax on Sunday, June 9th, 2019. Born September 30, 1924 in England, she was a daughter of the late Cornelius and Evelyn (Honisett) Banister. She came to Canada in August, 1946 as the war bride of Douglas B. Rogers. After Doug’s discharge from the army, they moved to Oxford, where they continued to live and raise their family. Initially a « stay-at-home » Mom, when her children became teenagers, she followed her love of flowers, and together with her good friend and fellow war bride, Olive Ripley, opened Oxford Flower Shop. After Olive retired, she continued to run the floral business until retiring herself in 1989. Later, it was her own flower gardens that became her pride and joy. She and Doug loved to travel, and went on many cruises and bus tours over the years. Their travels also included yearly trips to Flowers Canada conventions in every province, where they made life-long friends. In the winters, you would find them at Ski Wentworth. On a Saturday night, you would always find them on the dance floor, locally, in Truro, or sometimes almost to Halifax. Doug was her one true love. After failing health took him to a nursing home, she made the trip every day, rain, shine or snowstorm, to visit him. She is survived by her three children, Paul (Sharon), Oxford; Patricia (Vincent) Stevens, Williamsdale; and Jennifer (Paul) Bishop, Kolbec; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, John Banister, England; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Douglas, in June, 2012; brothers, Tom and Den; sister, Pat. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m., followed by funeral service at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 14, in MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, 5075 Main Street, Oxford (902-447-2930).
