Passed away suddenly on June 23rd at St Clare’s Mercy Hospital; Ada Lorraine Street (Smith) of South River at the age of 74.
Ada was born to Victor and Maude Smith of South River on October 20th, 1944. She grew up in South River and later moved to St. John’s where she raised her three children, Edward, Ruth and Rodney.
Ada was not one to be dazzled by glamour but rather loved the simple things in life. She expected nothing but gave everything to anything she did. She worked at the Benevolent Irish Society while raising three children on her own. Ada worked very hard her entire life and took pride in what was most dear to her; her children and family.
Her love for life, for her children, her brothers and sister her grandchildren, her nieces, nephews and friends was relentless. Ada held such a youthful spirit, so young at her 74 years. She loved nothing more than to socialize; catching up with family and friends when she did. She enjoy bingo nights, long walks and simply having fun. It was such a set back to her to learn about her heart condition; but she accepted what was to follow. She had surgery on May 1st, 2019. She was up and about the same day; very determined to regain her health. When asked how she was feeling, her response was ‘sore, but that’s all”.
Ada spoke constantly of her mother and father with love and pride; sharing memories of her childhood. It seemed that each and every story she told was of nothing but the fun she had growing up. That love for her parents is the same love that she gave to her children and entire family.
Ada was predeceased by her parents, Victor and Maude Smith; her son, Edward Street, her brother David Smith; and her sister Ruth Smith. She is survived by her brother Guy Smith (Dallas); Rhody Smith (Susan); her daughter Ruth Street (Paul Harris) and son, Rodney Street (Claudette). Also left to mourn are four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a large circle of family and friends.
It was Ada’s final wishes to decline a wake. She asked to be laid to rest with her parents. There will be a small ceremony at the graveside; Salmon Cove Anglican Cemetery Thursday, June 27th at 3:30PM.
The family would also like to say a thank you to the staff of the St Clare’s Mercy Hospital for the care and compassion given to our mother during her short illness.
